During the Age of Sail, wood was a precious source needed for ship repair service and other handicrafts. It's most likely that seafarer's valentines were handcrafted by local Barbadian females for seafarers to bring home to their sweeties and households as mementos of a brief stop at port, while provisions were being collected and vessel repair services made.

The octagonal shape of the shell mosaic was possibly influenced by 19th century women' parlor art and the Victorian collage-making and covering collection fad referred to as conchylomania. Regardless, the beautiful mementos happy recipients back home and no doubt inspired brand-new types of ornamental shellwork. Sailors' valentines continue to be a remarkable link to maritime history.
